Random Musings and Movies
It's been a peculiar day today, for some reason I had been thinking about Karachi a lot. And the trigger wasn't anything from the news, but from the movie/musical 'Once'.The significance? 'Once' was the last movie I watched, at least attempted to watch but couldn't get past the first 20 mins!. It was the last day in Karachi, and there was just a few things left to pack. Rabayl and Kurt started to play this movie and I joined in thinking, what the hell, it's something to pass time.
Turned out to be a bad idea. If you've watched the movie, you would agree with me that it's definitely not one that you would want to see on the last day in Karachi, on the last day of what had been the best year in life so far, the last few precious moments where you felt truly content and complete simply because the people you love are with you.
I miss the movie nights with the family. We probably fit 10 people in that tiny living room at a time... 4 on the couch, 2 on the floor, 2 on chairs and 2 on the LIPS!! Ah.. the red lips... nothing like it anywhere else. The lips is a survivor indeed, having scraped through a hot iron (the scar still remains I believe) and not to mention a kidnapping from the upstairs apartment!
[For those of you who read this, and wonder whose lips I mean, it's the Intern Clubhouse couch filled with foam pellets, aka a bean cushion in the shape and colour of lips. It got burned by a hot iron which left a small hole, but was sewn and patched up. And our living arrangements were such that the interns lived on level 2, and the MC 07/08 on level 3. Do your math and you'll know who stole our furniture!]
Anyway, I remember watching 'I am Legend'... 'The Shawshank Redemption'... 'Om Shanti Om' and many others with this surrogate family,
Be it squeezed on the couch or sprawled on the floor,
Good movies, bad movies... you name it, we've bought it. (at the DVD store!)
And despite our differences in nationalities, differences in opinions on the plot of the story, one thing unites us all. And that is the colourful use of expletives when the power supply goes out, right in the middle of the play! "F***! Sh*T! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!"
Hereafter we wait for an hour or two... muse about the fella at KESC that controls the power switch and wondering how much would we need to bribe him to get our power back... or try magic words and incantations, and maybe the occasional song...
And boy do we REJOICE! when the lights turn on again and the fan starts spinning!! and we could press the 'play' button and resume, and find out why did the Coward, Robert Ford assasinate Jesse James? :)
These random musings and movies filled my thoughts today, thanks to the movie 'Once'. On 28th July 2008 I got up from the couch right after this song played, to escape... because it expressed all the loss I felt on that fateful day of departure... And still today I can't seem to get past this song...
